The Paediatric Assessment consists of evaluating the appearance of the child, including things like muscle tone, inter-activeness, eye contact, and whether or not they are making vocalizations appropriate for their age. This examination helps to screen largely for abnormalities of growth and development and to establish the nature and cause and extent of any illness or injury. It also helps to find out the normal developmental milestones, as well as routine physical development and findings at different ages. Problems with development, behaviour and growth may thus be identified opportunistically whilst examining a child.

Music therapy can help a child manage pain and stressful situations. Music can encourage socialization, self-expression, communication, and motor development. As the brain processes music in both hemispheres, music can stimulate cognitive functioning and may be used for remediation of some speech/language skills. Music therapy can help kids cope with loss and grief and help with their communication and social skills. Overall, music therapy can improve coping abilities, manage pain and help with stressors associated with many factors.
Art and play therapy has been shown to benefit people of all ages. Research indicates art therapy can improve communication and concentration and can help reduce feelings of isolation. This type of therapy has also been shown to lead to increases in self-esteem, confidence, and self-awareness. It improves the ability to deal with pain and other frightening symptoms in children with illness and reduces stress and anxiety in children with asthma. It also helps stimulate mental function in older adults with dementia.
